Theres is a sense in which our culture is pretty established. There’s a way to get most things. Want to take a break? not a worry…purchase a movie ticket. Need a thrill? not a worry…take a jet-boat ride on the harbour. Time to change careers? study online part-time. Feeling ill? There are more specialist health practitioners now than ever. How much do we bring the impression of a stable system we think we understand into the way we understand our God? I’m not sure what the answer is…but I sense I do this. The God of turning water to wine (John 2), of shaming the wise with the foolish (1 Cor 1:27), of silently knocking over idols He’s placed near (1 Sam 5) doesn’t suit my patterns of control in any way really. May it be that God’s gentleness and power showcased in scripture becomes more and more a felt reality in our lives…a reality that calls us to tap out, and worship Him.
